Refined over the years with feedback from practitioners, Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is one of the most popular models for improving processes used to develop products and services. Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe®) is a disciplined structure to foster agile practices at the enterprise level. Organizations can achieve several synergies and benefits by using CMMI v2.0 in a SAFe environment. Whereas CMMI provides guidance on what process improvement teams need to do with respect to each of the model's practice areas, SAFe provides them with information on how to implement those practices. The experiences of a mid-size IT firm in implementing CMMI in a SAFe environment highlight the importance of program increment planning, iteration management, iteration execution, built-in quality, and enterprise management, as well as the implementation challenges that are likely to arise when streamlining processes to improve customer satisfaction.
