Levi Strauss and Co. had a problem. In the early 1960s, as the iconic U.S. apparel-maker prepared to open its first southern U.S. manufacturing plant in Blackstone, Virginia, the city's civic leaders demanded that the company hire only white workers. But Levi's refused, threatening to move its factory to another city if it couldn't be integrated. Eyeing local jobs, the civic leaders agreed to allow blacks in the same facility-so long as they were separated from whites at all times. Levi's stood its ground. Eventually the city backed off, and Levi's opened one of the first integrated workplaces in Virginia.
