Advanced Planning System as support for Sales and Operation Planning: study in a Brazilian automaker

The Advanced Planning System (APS) is a system that provides optimisation of programming activities and provides support for forecasting and planning of demand, production and materials, providing support for the company's decision-making. Sales and Operation Planning (S&OP) is a process for improving demand management, which minimises conflicts between sales, marketing and production in the construction of feasible sales and production plans. In order to identify how the APS can assist in S&OP process, specifically in Demand Planning stage, this research studies an automaker located in Brazil Data were collected through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire with the participation of 11 professionals directly related to the S&OP and APS processes. The results show that APS assists the S&OP process by serving as a support tool for viewing demand, production plans, constraints and planning histories; integrating decisions into the Enterprise Resource Planning system; and serving as an essential instrument in aiding decision-making for the accuracy it offers for forecasts and plans. However, some points of the system could be improved, such as minimising human failures in data entry and the need for weekly adjustments that influence the level of security stock of suppliers.
