摘要

Fevered Measures is an engaging and multi-layered historical narrative that underscores the centrality of public health to daily life, social relations and power dynamics along the Texas-Mexico border over one century. Until the publication of this book, the varied experiences and examples of health crises along the border had been explored as separate episodes, if at all. Drawing from extensive research with US and Mexican records, Mckiernan-Gonzalez reconstructs a long and complex historical period that saw the hardening of the US-Mexico boundary line, major transformations in understandings of disease and the rise of modern public health policies and bureaucracies. What makes this story particularly compelling is that Mckiernan-Gonzalez frames it with a compassionate and informed plea for greater awareness of Latina/o health disparities.
