Diego Armus, one of the most accomplished scholars of the history of medicine in Latin America, has produced a comprehensive history of tuberculosis (TB) in Buenos Aires from the 1870s to 1950 when the dreaded disease was largely controlled by antibiotics. Armus shows how TB permeated almost every aspect of public life and culture and, somewhat surprisingly, how groups of very different political persuasions often approached the disease in similar ways.
