Veolia Water is focusing on opportunities in Ukraine, Russia and Poland as it seeks to expand in central and eastern Europe. In an interview with GWR, Pierre Brunet, Veolia's operations director for central Europe and Russia, said recent political changes in Ukraine made it more attractive. "The new regime gives Ukraine a more favourable outlook and we see opportunities there, not right now but in the future. There is no private sector involvement in the country's water sector and we are ready for those opportunities when they materialise, although it is difficult to predict when that will be. It is early but it's important to be ready," Brunet said. "The same is true for Russia. It is a huge market which everyone is excited about but the institutional framework is not very mature and the law does not allow concessions. It's a combination of willingness to do business and being careful under which conditions," he added. Veolia already has a water leakage detection contract with St Petersburg Vodokanal and a contract to build a sludge treatment plant.
