It is ironic that, just as the UK debates ways of persuading customers to save water in the face of climate change worries, the Czech Republic and Germany agonise over the decline in sales hitting water company profits, German water and gas association BGW has actually chided German consumers for trying to reduce their water consumption. "It may sound paradoxical but saving water costs money since the fixed costs of maintaining water quality and security of supply cannot be reduced and the same customers must carry these costs," says Pete Rebohle vice president of the BGW (Bundesverband der Gas-und Wasserwirtschaft). Massive savings in water results in problems in the networks "which can only be cleared with expensive measures" like flushing out pipelines.
