Spain's first desalination plant to start functioning since the desalination-based Program AGUA was presented by the socialist government last year was inaugurated by environment minister Cristina Narbona on May 16 at San Pedro del Pinatar in the drought-hit region of Murcia in south-east Spain. The plant will begin producing 1 cubic hectometer (Hm3)/month, a total of 8 Hm3 this year, and 24 Hm3 in 2006, supplying an area housing three million people mainly in Alicante province. In explaining the advantages of Program AGUA, Narbona said at the inauguration that although the ?72 million San Pedro del Pinatar plant had been put out to tender in 1995, the contract was not awarded until 1999. Construction took five years, and the plant is located by a marine plant colony which means that brine will have to be ejected back into the sea at a distance of 5 kilometers once a special pipe is built by 2006.
