After three and a half years of attempting to secure higher tariffs for Aguas Argentinas, Suez is calling it quits. Aguas' board of directors, which is controlled by the French company, said September 19 it would ask shareholders on September 22 to consider starting "the process of revoking the contract" for the water and wastewater concession in Buenos Aires. In a statement, the Suez board said negotiations to raise tariffs and solve the financial problems of the concession had failed: "Confronted with the fact that it is impossible to re-establish the concession's economic and financial balance, Aguas Argentinas is no longer in a position to assume the risks and responsibilities linked to the water and waste services operations provided to the city of Buenos Aires," it said.
