We have shown that we can estimate the displacement (the actual change in position along the slope due to a "landslide") from observations of just two satellites when the direction of the anticipated movement is known. In this case, the slope is another line of position. This assumption could be later replaced with a landslide outbreak model for a particular site. The technique uses relatively inexpensive single-frequency receivers several of which could be deployed over a potential landslide area. A short-range data communications system, such as Wi-Fi, could be used to transfer the data from these receivers to a nearby monitoring station or relay site for real-time processing. With such a network in place, it should be possible to detect precursory displacements and to provide a timely warning of any impending landslide.
