The printing industry as a whole has never be-fore witnessed the extensive system automation now offered by vendors. On the press side, even small sheetfeds boast automatic ink settings, computer-controlled registration, automatic plate-changing systems and lots more. So it goes with the bindery. Auto-preset cutters, folders, saddlestitchers and binders abound. Equipment is integrated via JDF and other formats to computerized job files. Parameters for cutting, folding, etc., are transferred seamlessly. But automation comes at a price. When it comes time to replace bindery equipment, or buy for capacity, one is well-advised to look at the pros and cons.
