An influential public policy expert at Boise State University, who was often quoted by E&E News and other media outlets on myriad public lands issues affecting the West, died Saturday. John Freemuth, the Cecil D. Andrus endowed chair for environment and public lands at Boise State, died of a sudden heart attack, according to an email sent yesterday to friends and colleagues of Freemuth from Tracy Andrus, the late Cecil Andrus' daughter. "It is with an extremely heavy heart that I tell you that our esteemed Chair, John Freemuth, passed away unexpectedly yesterday from a heart attack," she wrote. "I ask that you keep John's wife Sheri and their two sons in your prayers." Freemuth, who spent decades at the Andrus Center for Public Policy at Boise State, was a well-respected professor at the university, as well as a trusted source of expertise for both policymakers and journalists. He died at age 69. "As a trusted and reliable source of expertise and knowledge, John was often sought after by local, state, and national news media outlets for his perspective and analysis on issues related to public lands and the interface between public policy and science. And John never hesitated to accommodate such requests, thus becoming a reporter's 'dream-cometrue,'" Andy Giacomazzi, interim dean of Boise State's School of Public Service, wrote in an email distributed yesterday to colleagues.
