Human-made materials now exceed all living biomass on Earth, according to a new study, with plastics aloneestimated to total a greater mass than all land and marine animals on the planet.The mass of all materials ever created by humans equals around 1.1 trillion metric tons, researchers estimate ina study published Dec. 9 in the journal Nature. They conclude the materials have increased dramatically sincethe beginning of the 20th century, which they say adds justification to dubbing our current era the"Anthropocene," due to the role humans have played in shaping the world.
