Residents of and visitors to St. Croix yesterday announced a proposed class action lawsuit against an embattled oil refinery on the Caribbean island. The challengers say the operators of the Limetree Bay refinery should be on the hook for long-term medical monitoring of the toxic emissions it releases and should compensate local property owners for negligence and nuisance. "The people of these communities have suffered from any number of concerning and potentially deadly effects from the reckless reopening of this facility," Warren Burns of Burns Charest LLP, which filed the proposed class action, said in a statement yesterday. "The problems with this refinery should be fixed, and the needs of those who have suffered from those problems should be addressed."
