Patient investment in conservation efforts appears to have paid off, as the Fish and Wildlife Service todayproposed downgrading the endangered razorback sucker to a threatened species.The potential Endangered Species Act downlisting of the Colorado River Basin fish comes about three yearsafter the Fish and Wildlife Service cited recovery progress and recommended the action for the species, whichhas received full-bore federal protection since 1991."I think back to the early days when I was out there ... and how much ground we've covered over the course ofthe last 30 years, building populations up to where they are right now," Tom Chart, director of the Upper ColoradoRiver Endangered Fish Recovery Program, told E&E News. "It's really encouraging, and I'm just glad that we arefinally able to get the word out."
