President Trump's decision to slap tariffs on imported solar panels — combined with new federal tax laws — will slow the growth of the U.S. solar industry, according to a new report. The country will see 13 percent fewer rooftop solar installations between 2018 and 2022 than originally forecast, according to the report from GTM Research, commissioned by the Solar Energy Industries Association. In addition, the market will not return to the peak level of installations in 2016 - 15.2 gigawatts — at least through 2023. The report builds on the gloomy predictions of SEIA, the leading solar industry trade group. After Trump issued the tariffs, SEIA warned that the solar industry would lose tens of thousands of jobs (E&E News PM. June 15, 2017). In a recent interview with E&E News, SEIA President Abigail Ross Hopper stood by that forecast (Greenwire. Feb. 20).
