Greater sage grouse and oil and natural gas development can successfully coexist in the bird's sensitive habitat, according to a new study that also emphasizes the animals fare better when drilling activity is far away. Specifically, targeted mitigation efforts such as preserving sagebrush in grouse nesting areas can sufficiently lessen the impacts of drilling activity and allow for successful nesting activity that is a key to the bird's survival, according to the study, led by researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey.
