Oil drilling companies have cut nearly 4,000 jobs in their latest round of layoffs, and more are expected in the coming months as they figure out how much drilling to do next year. The cuts revealed yesterday include Houston's ConocoPhillips Co. moving to lay off 1,800 employees and 1,000 contractors and Canada's Penn West Petroleum and Norway's Aker Solutions cutting 900 jobs together. "At the employee level in Houston, the worst hasn't been felt yet," said Dennis Cassidy, a managing director at consulting firm AlixPartners. "The fact that they're acting now suggests they fundamentally believe they're not going to have the same exuberance in the oil patch as before."
