Scientists are testing out a fruit fly genetically engineered to kill itself as a new form of pest control. Researchers released mutant male fruit flies -- carrying a gene that leads to the death of female offspring before they reach adulthood -- into a greenhouse, resulting in a collapse of the population of fruit flies. U.K.-based biotech company Oxitec Ltd. engineered the lethal gene so it wouldn't inhibit the growth of male fruit flies. The study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B showed that the population of flies died after several generations when the males could no longer find females to mate with.
