Federal officials have decided to remove the Pacific walrus from a list of animals that have been affected by a mysterious skin lesion disease. Since 2011, the disease has afflicted ice seals and walruses in Alaska's North Slope and Bering Strait regions. First, in July of that year, sick or dead ice seals -- ringed, ribbon, bearded and spotted -- started turning up in elevated numbers with lesions and patchy hair loss. Then, in September, walrus carcasses were reported off the Chukchi Sea coast.
