Soft soil deposits (natural or reclaimed land in coastal regions) generally exhibit low shear strength and high compressibility. The in situ deep mixing technique to form composite soft ground has been an effective means of ground improvement, adopted extensively in Japan. This paper deals with a field investigation of the effect of various parameters in in situ mixing: installation rate, which considers penetration and withdrawal during mixing; speed of rotation of mixing wing; and cement content and water/cement ratio in the slurry used. In order to have close control over these installation parameters a laboratory model column study has also been undertaken. The findings from both investigations have been integrated with earlier basic laboratory studies on induced cementation of cement-admixed clays. A practical method is suggested for arriving at different parameters in the installation of columnar inclusion to produce composite ground of the required average strength.
