It is a privilege to have been invited to write a column for this prestigious and respected journal on a regular basis. I will be writing two columns per year (summer and winter) on the general theme Advances in In Situ Remediation. I would like to take this opportunity to share my experiences and those of my world-class colleagues who are working hard to shift the paradigms within the arena of in situ remediation. This first column has been written in collaboration with John Horst, Chief Geochemist and Principal Engineer at ARCADIS. Science and technology are never static. Motivated by "there must be a better way," scientists and engineers always look for innovative methods and solutions often overlapping one another as they evolve into accepted practice and preferred methods. The potential for significant cost reductions more than scientific curiosity is what makes the pursuit of innovative technologies such a hot topic.
