In the U.S. blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, and other closely related species, commonly referred to as the Florida red tide, occur frequently on Florida's west coast, sometimes in other areas of the Gulf of Mexico, and occasionally on the Atlantic coast of the U.S. Research on these natural phenomena began in the 1940s upon identification of the causative organism and has continued to the present, but "poisoned water", that we now know to be due to the impacts of blooms, was documented as early as the 1880s. Blooms of K. brevis have caused massive fish kills, benthic die-offs, and marine mammal, bird, and turtle mortalities. Human illnesses result from consumption of shellfish contaminated with brevetoxins, the neurotoxin produced by K. brevis, or exposure to toxin laden aerosols on or near beaches.rnA scientific workshop, State of the Research on Red Tide in the Gulf of Mexico, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Mote Marine Laboratory (MML), and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and held July 17-20, 2006 at MML, summarized and synthesized existing research on K. brevis and developed priorities for future research.
