For most of my career as an environmental professional, I have had to live with the fact that environmental considerations were a cost item on a company's balance sheet. The business case for any environmental expenditure was that it was the cost of doing business and staying out of jail. In recent years, there is a trend developing for companies to go beyond the regulatory requirement and consider the potential benefits of taking an environmental leadership role. With a growing list of companies now considering the benefits of going beyond environmental compliance, the question is, "Does it pay?"
