Variations in temperature and other weather conditions can significantly impact the progress of emergency response to outdoor hazardous materials (HazMat) operations. Heat stress and hypothermia are interrelated physical challenges that do not decrease the formidable nature of this work/Extreme weather can also negatively impact the effectiveness of some of the equipment used during such operations. Since most of all reported chemical incidents occur during the summer months, emergency responders across the country should be aware of the impacts that warmer climes have on the functionality of personal protective equipment (PPE) as well site monitoring and modeling tools.
