A fast calculation method for the mean temperature difference is presented for the design of multi-pass cross-flow plate heat exchangers. Within the individual areas of the plate heat exchanger, a pure cross-flow is obtained without cross-mixing. On the other hand, between the regions both streams are always cross-mixed due to redirection or mixing zones. The individual plate elements of a region are always uniformly fluid-supplied. The calculation method is based on a matrix simulation model for general circuit variants. In order to ensure the optimal possible mean temperature difference for various series of cross-flow plate heat exchangers, specific boundary conditions for the coupling of the regions are predetermined in advance. Next to different complex circuits, also the so-called cross-countercurrent circuit is obtained. A corresponding correction factor for the temperature difference is determined with reference to the temperature difference of the counter-flow. Basic circuit variants are compared and evaluated using this correction factor. The simulation model can be solved quickly and effectively for the circuits that are relevant in practice. In order to determine an optimal circuit, the calculation method can be implemented into the software for the thermal design of corresponding cross-flow heat exchangers.
