On the variation of acid-labile aryl ether unit content in wood lignin

Wood lignin is known to contain a variety of aryl ether units (Figure 1) with different reactivity under acidic conditions (Adler 1977). These include the non-cyclic a-aryl ether 1 (ring B), β-aryl ether 1 (ring C), dibenzodioxocin 2, a spiro-dienone (β-1/α-O-α) 3 and cyclic α-aryl ether 4 structures. Among these units, the non-cyclic a-aryl ether structure 1 is of special significance, as it represents the most acid-labile linkage of lignin molecules, being hydrolyzed approximately 10~2-fold faster than the p-aryl ether units based on model dimer reactions under mild hydrolysis conditions (Johansson and Miksche 1972).
