Montage Laguna Beach, California, is using specially trained Harris hawks, Peregrine falcons and Asian owls to disperse so-called "pest birds" like seagulls, crows and pigeons from the resort area. Licensed falconers oversee the sustainable bird abatement program, which uses the predatory birds every other day to intimidate the pest birds from seeking feeding and nesting opportunities at the 250-key resort.rnThe program is considered environmentally sustainable because the pest birds are not physicallyrnharmed. In fact, dispersing them to less populated areas actually does the birds a favor, as their resort diet of human food scraps is unhealthy. Additionally, the program serves as a form of guest entertainment. The falconers interact with guests, educating them about training techniques and the birds' natural habits, and guests are later invited to watch the majestic creatures in action. "It has been such a huge hit with our guests and our local community," says the resort's managing director, James Bermingham. "It's just magnificent to look at. It's been a huge success and has done a phenomenal job of keeping the seagull and crow populations down."
