With labor contracts already expired or soon to expire in seven major cities and a number of smaller markets across North America, hoteliers are facing an important operational challenge: keeping labor costs in check while preventing widespread striking and a more adversarial relationship with a large and influential union. UNITE HERE, a combination of the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees, and the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International, coordinated the expiration of the labor contracts throughout this year in the interest of increasing its bargaining strength and looking to initiate a corporate-level negotiation with major hotel companies.
