Nearly 200km north of Gothenburg, work is taking place at top speed on the new Svinesund Bridge. From mid-2005, this bridge (part of the project to complete the E 6 Gothenburg to Oslo motorway) will serve as a new border crossing between Sweden and Norway. This highly unusual arched bridge was designed by the Norwegian architectural practice of Lund & Slaatto from Oslo, and is being built by Bilfinger Berger AG's bridge building branch, based in Wiesbaden, Germany. The client is the Swedish National Road Administration (Vaegverket). The design was the result of an international architectural design contest. The winning design is an elegant but structurally complicated bridge as it combines a very slender construction with a special structural form. This bridge will be unique, as far as is known no other arched-bridge of this scale exists where only a single arch is used. The use of a single arch has meant that the bridge is susceptible to problems of instability both during the construction stage and the service life of the bridge.
