Looking up at the six rotating, 6-ft. (1.8-m) diameter disco balls and the mirrored ceiling of the Hillside Su's lobby, Edip I.lkbahar muses that the nine-story atrium is a 24-hour living night club. "Our lobby is a blank white canvas. It is the guests who are the most important 'objects,'" says I.lkbahar, executive vice president, Alarko-Hillside Leisure Co., operator for the 10-month-old hotel in Antalya, Turkey. "Every space is designed for their enjoyment. The lighting, the music and the rotating mirrored balls are manipulated from time to time and from day to day to match the feeling of the crowd." Think sybaritic. Think sensual. Think saleable to the tune of US$130 to US$270 in Antalya, where sub-US$100 rates are more the upscale norm. In the hands of Eren Talu, principal of the hotel's architect/interior designer/lighting designer, Turkey's Eren Talu Architects, light and color become the defining design elements in this sleek 1960s-inspired Mediterranean retreat. Talu paints with light and sculpts with mirrors to distance guests from time and reality. Different illumination elements and color changing light fixtures give each area its own distinct identity.
