Newly built and forward-thinking hotels such as the Sheraton Krakow, Marriott's Grande Lakes Orlando, the Langham Place in Hong Kong, Holiday Inn's new prototype in Duluth, Georgia, and Mandarin Oriental hotels in New York City and Washington, D.C., are among the early adapters of Internet protocol (IP) communications systems, but what will eventually become an applications bonanza for hotels' internal and external customers is not taking the industry by overnight storm. Obtaining the crucial network quality assessment, justifying the cost of a retrofit, developing necessary support networks, addressing network security issues and the lack of a "killer application" are among the issues making the transition a challenging proposition.
