Until the economy turns around, maxi-mizing the Internet is all about building occupancy. Yield is clearly a priority, but, for most hoteliers, lower achieved rates look better on the books than empty beds. That means more pressure on hoteliers to find tactics that generate more bookings at the lowest possible cost. The need to cut costs has hoteliers scrambling to drive business directly through their own or their brand's site. Most companies estimate site-direct business costs 20% to 50% less than business delivered through third-party sites and intermediaries. Then, there are the added benefits of repeat marketing opportunities to a loyal target audience (with no messages from competitors) and cross-selling potential that does not exist with third parties. Equally significant is the ability to carefully control all inventory. A well-designed site ensures the most cost effective entry into an electronic distribution universe that annually generates US$19 billion worth of room nights.
