Being a host is something wonderful." These are the words Emanuel Berger lives by. HOTELS' 2003 Independent Hotelier of the World is not interested in talking about himself nor taking credit for devoting the last 33 years of his life to making the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa in Interlaken, Switzerland, one of Europe's truly legendary places to stay. Instead, he prefers to passionately work in the fashion of a classically trained Swiss hotelier―a "front person" who actually likes to see his guests and interact with his staff. "What do we sell?" asks the 62-year-old, impeccably dressed, buttoned-up hotelier. "We sell our emotions. We fulfill dreams. We prepare the stage for our guests' performance. This is something every hotelier must understand."
