More than ever, you may have to look further than a high school diploma to find a skilled hire, says a new study. Why? According to scores from the Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT), the cognitive scores of high school graduates declined between 1970 and 2005. The WPT measures learning speed. It doesn't mean all high school graduates have less smarts, say the study's authors. But high school grads may not have the same math, language and cognitive skills to do the job as a 1970 graduate. Suggestion: You may have to update your job ads to a minimum of two to three years of college education. Or add that you prefer a certain number of years experience doing that particular job.
