If you're like a lot of employers, the phrase "reasonable accommodation" may sound like fingernails on a blackboard to you. After all, you may think, what the ADA and the courts define as reasonable accommodation for a disabled employee may not seem so reasonable to the company paying for it. But take heart: There's good news about the cost of accommodations. The Law, Health Policy and Disability Center of the University of Iowa is studying employers that have accommodated disabled workers. Although the study won't be complete until 2007, preliminary data on 778 employers shows that 50.5% managed to make an accommodation at no cost! Another 42% said their accommodations resulted in an average one-time cost of $600.
