In an announcement April 17, Starbucks said it would be closing its more than 8,000 company-owned storesrnin the United States during the afternoon of May 29 to conduct racial-bias education geared toward preventingrndiscrimination in its stores. The training will be provided to nearly 175,000 employees and would become part ofrnthe onboarding process for new workers, the company said.rnStarbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said of the decision that the company was "committed to being a part of thernsolution" to the issue of what some characterize as "unconscious bias," evidenced by media reports of thernarrest and handcuffing of two African-American men who visited a Starbucks in Philadelphia without making anyrnpurchases, apparently while waiting to meet friends. "Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step inrna journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities,"rnJohnson said.
