Medicare Advantage program. Federal law passed in August 1997 created Medicare Part C. It was originally called Medicare+Choice, but was renamed Medicare Advantage (MA) by federal legislation in 2003. Medicare beneficiaries who are entitled to Part A and enrolled in Part B are eligible to participate in MA, which offers more plan options than original, fee-for-service Medicare. MA plans provide all Part A and Part B coverage, and many of them also provide a prescription drug benefit. MA plans also may offer vision, hearing, dental and wellness coverage not offered by traditional Medicare. There are also "special needs" MA plans, designed for people with certain chronic conditions and specialized health needs.rnBeneficiaries who are satisfied with the way they currently receive their Medicare benefits are not required to do anything; they may continue their coverage in original Medicare. The choice belongs to the beneficiary.rnWhen a beneficiary chooses coverage under a MA plan, the payments Medicare makes to the plan replace the amounts Medicare otherwise would have paid under Parts A and B. The beneficiary's monthly premium replaces the Part B premium otherwise paid to Medicare. In addition to the premium, the beneficiary may be responsible for copayments, coinsurance and deductibles.
