After a five-month waiting period, a worker who becomes disabled can get disability benefits. These benefits are figured in much the same way that old-age benefits are figured, and benefits are also payable to the worker's dependents. However, for the younger disabled worker there is a special limit on family benefits (see 3925).rnOnce a worker is found to have a period of disability, his or her wage record is protected by excluding the period of disability.rnIn order to be considered disabling, the disability must be severe enough to prevent the worker from doing substantial gainful work, and must last or be expected to last for at least 12 months or to result in death. Except for those who are statutorily blind, employee earnings above $980 per month in 2009 ($940 in 2008), excluding impairment-related work expenses, are considered evidence of an ability to perform substantial work. A higher amount applies to those who are blind: $1,640 ($1,570 in 2008). The self-employed are evaluated under other criteria.rnThe worker must have enough quarters of coverage so that he or she would have been considered "fully insured" if the worker had attained retirement age, and at least 20 quarters of those quarters of coverage must have been earned in the 40-quarter period ending with the quarter in which disability began.
