To ensure local acceptance of the 144-mw Kali Gandaki A hydroelectric project, the government of Nepal prepared a comprehensive environmental mitigation package. The experiences at Kali Gandaki A — which began operating in August 2002 ―provide valuable lessons about what does and does not work. Hydro project developers make extensive efforts to integrate environmental impact assessments, along with mitigation and enhancement measures, into project design and implementation. The focus on this work is high in recent years, as concern grows about the effects of new projects. During construction of the Kali Gandaki A hydro project in western Nepal, developers learned what mitigation measures did and did not work, leading to a greater understanding for future hydro projects.
