Duyfken's voyage of 1606 is recognised as the first historically recorded voyage to Australia, but it is sometimes deprecated as a near-blind reconnaissance by mariners who did not realise that they had reached a land beyond New Guinea. This paper argues that Duyfken's voyage was an intentional and competent voyage of exploration, and that Captain Willem Janszoon and supercargo Jan Rosengeyn had a sophisticated and largely correct understanding of what they discovered. The Nova Guinea which they sought and found should not be understood to be the same as New Guinea.
