Working in the practical world of hydrography, or in the widening sphere of geomatics, one often comes across remarks (usually disparaging) about the quality of recruits to the profession. As a generalisation we all tend to think that the task of gaining qualifications and learning the ropes was 'much harder in my day'. For those of us who jumped through the hoops of academia and 'Tests of Professional Competence', two, three or more decades ago, the Question of whether it is easier now than then, is debatable-the Question of whether or not it is different, is without doubt.
