The eighteenth century was a time of rapid expansion of the British Empire, domestic manufacturing industry, overseas trade and, In support of our new found prosperity, the Merchant Service. Mariners then relied upon whatever information they could find to Hely navigate from port to port across unfamiliar seas and oceans to Strange distant lands; the Royal Navy, protecting this trade from Enemies and pirates, had little by way of charts and sailing directions Other than those acquired from the same sources as their Merchant Brethren: mostly compiled by commercial interests from information Provided by explorers and earlier trading voyagers.
