The present issue of Hydrological Sciences Journal (HSJ) marks two important milestones in the development of this journal. The first is that it commences the 50th volume of the Journal and the second is that it starts a new era in HSJ's history—from now on HSJ will be available online to subscribers; printed copies will continue to be produced, at least for some time into the future. Hydrological Sciences Journal is the oldest periodical in the field worldwide. No other journal, national or international, devoted to the area of hydrological sciences, started as early as 1956. Hydrological Sciences Journal is published by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the oldest international learned society in the water-related sciences, serving the world hydrological community since 1922. In fact, the Association incorporated the, even older, International Commission of Glaciers (precursor of the present IAHS International Commission on Snow and Ice), dating back to 1894. The name "International Association of Hydrological Sciences" was adopted in 1971.
