On January 31 and February 21, 1999, strong earthquakes of energy class respectively K = 14.8 and K = 13.5 with a magnitude up to 5.6 and intensity up to 6 occurred in the region of the sequence of Sulak hydroelectric stations. Residential and public buildings and utility lines in the villages of Kizilyurt, Kul'zeb, Chiryurt, and Miatli received Considerable damage. Aftershock activity of the foci is continuing to this day. The epicenter of the January 31 Earthquake was located 20 km north of the Chirkey hydrostation downstream on the Right band, and the February 21 earthquake-10 km on the left.
