The 2-parameter family of probability distributions introduced bynBirnbaum and Saunders characterizes the fatigue failure of materialsnsubjected to cyclic stresses and strains. It is shown that the methodsnof accelerated life testing are applicable to the Birnbaum-Saundersndistribution for analyzing accelerated lifetime data, and the (inverse)npower law model is used due to its justification for describingnaccelerated fatigue failure in metals. This paper develops the (inverse)npower law accelerated form of the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution, andnexplores the corresponding inference procedures-including parameternestimation techniques and the derivation of the s-expected Fisherninformation matrix. The model approach in this paper is different fromnan earlier work, which considered a log-linear form of a model withnapplications to accelerated life testing. Here, using an example datanset, the fitted model is effectively used to estimate lower distributionnpercentiles and mean failure times for particular values of thenacceleration variable. The benefits of having an operable closed form ofnthe Fisher information matrix, which is unique to this article for thisnmodel, include interval estimation of model parameters and LCB onnpercentiles using relatively simple computational procedures
