In this paper, we present an application of the K-distribution fornmodeling the amplitude of a backscattered signal in a nondestructivenevaluation (NDE) setting, discuss procedures for resolving well-knownncomputational difficulties associated with obtaining maximum likelihoodnestimates (MLE), and present a comparison with other candidate modelsnfor the distribution of the maximum of an unknown number of independent,nidentically distributed (iid) random variables
