The propagation of a high amplitude surface acoustic wave in an Alnthin film induces a large-scale electromigration phenomenon resulting inna permanent etching of the acoustic field in the film. The etchednpatterns depend on the time of propagation and on the acousticncharacteristics. Preliminary observations of a few grooved structures innAl films have been performed by different techniques. A firstnexplanation of this phenomenon based on dynamical Grinfeld instabilitiesnis proposed. By providing permanent pictures of acoustic fields emittednby transducers, this effect could be used to perform imaging of surfacenacoustic wave propagation
