We present a generative model of the heartbeat intervals that captures the variations underlying the cardiac rhythm. Under the assumption of statistical independence, the model uses a bank of filters obtained from heartbeat intervals that are able to represent the input-output dynamics of the heart. To validate our model, we use cardiac responses data derived from rabbits to compare the response of the proposed model. As a result, we report a signal-to-noise ratio that ranges from 6 dB to 14 dB. These results strongly support the idea that efficient codes obtained from heartbeat intervals yield filter structures that mimic transfer functions of the autonomic control.
