Sometimes you don't need a real IFR clearance; you just need a relaxation of the VFR rules for a few minutes to get down to the ground. That's where a Special VFR clearance can be your friend. Pilots often forget about the Special,jumping directly to the IFR clearance when the airport has dropped below VFR minimums. That can mean a time-chewing vector out for a real approach—you won't get a visual because the airport isn't VFR—when the pilot could do a little bobbing and weaving to land at a runway that's in sight.You have to request a Special VFR clearance; ATC won't offer it. Unless your wings spin around on a powered shaft, you'll need to maintain only a mile of visibility and be clear of clouds. It's that latter freedom that is often the blessing of the Special. Imagine a situation where most of the airport is 500 overcast, but you can see one end of the runway through a gaping hole in the clouds. A Special VFR clearance could let you make any reasonable descent to land there rather than fly a real approach.
